EXEC
Mr. Arthur W. Green. Jr.
Dear Wayne:
Thanks for being so thoughtful in sending a newsclip from the CHICAGO
TRIBUNE discussing the size of portraits and portrait audiences here in
Washington, D.C. I was pleased to see the reference to my own portrait
unveiling at FBI Headquarters. Actually, because of physical constraints the
occasion was jampacked with well-wishers, including some of our St. Louis
friends.
At the unveiling I remarked that my years spent at the FBI were momentous
and exciting. I am proud of that time period and equally proud and equally
challenged by my current responsibilities as Director of Central Intelligence.
Thanks for your good thoughts.

The Capitol Hill Club is the Republican Club in Wash-
ington, but apparently some 'Republicans are 'more 'Re
Publican than . others. A couple of lunc rers in the club
dining room this week studied the grand -portraits along
the main well and noted that Ronald
Reagan 's likeness is
the same size as Abraham Lincoln's; even 1 hough the
clatter was a virtual founder of the Grand 'Old Party and
=the former a Johnmy-oome-lately former Democrat.
Neither sport ait,f however, : is. as big as the,
:adjoining
painting -of Dwight Eisenhower, who didn't decide
whether he was a --Democrat .or Republican until he an-
nounced his candidacy for the presidency in .1952.. The
;,POrtait of Teddy Roosevelt, who bolted the Republican
'Party in..1912 to form the Bull Moose party, is the same
size as Reagan's_and_Lincoln's, but larger than. all of them
is the `portrait downstairs of First Lady .Nancy Reagan.
me pblge II; portrait of all on the wall of honor is for-
and;;longtime House .,Minority Leader
':'Gerald Fond, who .was in the White House only two years
but has, nprobably .logged .,more time glad-handing at the
'Capitol--Hill,Club than all Republican presidents put to-
Sether (gotta take care of your best customers).
The Ford portrait is not as large as the full-length por-
trait of William `Webster, current CIA 'director and former FBI director, that was unveiled in the J. Edgar Hoover
Building last {week. ,Though, as news events go, the un-
veiling was ;sparsely attended by media heavies-as report-
ed earlier-it should not go unnoted that the ceremony
was thronged by 'well-wishers and department staff mem-
bers who wished to honor the highly popular judge Web-
ster for his 10 ' years at the helm of the FBI in highly
trying times.

I have been traveling with the Director and
was very pleased to see the clip from the CHICAGO
TRIBUNE on my return to the Washington area.
Judge Webster and I appreciate the amplification
your reporter supplied in his followup description
concerning the unveiling of Director Webster's
portrait at the J. Edgar Hoover building. You
followed through with your word to portray the
unveiling in a more accurate context and I deeply
appreciate that. I look forward to working with
you and your staff in the future.
Sincerely,
