Dear Bill,
The Department of Commerce has recently completed "Space Commerce: an Industry
Assessment", to be released to the public at noon today. This document is the first in what
will be a series of market assessments produced by the Commerce Department to provide
America's business leaders with the most current information available on the-commercial
space sector.
In the new National Space Policy and Commercial Space Initiative, the President calls for
increased reliance on the private sector for the development of commercial space. He also
states that Government impediments to private sector activity and investment in space must
be removed, and that this commitment be reinforced by assuring that the Government will
act as a customer, not as a competitor.
This assessment is based solely on information received after extensive research and
interaction with private industry. It addresses the major space-based markets such as
transportation, materials research and on-orbit facilities, and attempts to provide evaluations
of the demand, services available and recent history for these markets. Please find a copy
of this assessment attached for your information and reference.
