A member of the speaker's committee for the Delaware Bench and Bar
Association meeting, Rodman Ward, has invited you to be the luncheon speaker
for the Conference on 1 June. The meeting will be held at the University of
Delaware's Conference Center. The suggested format is 25 minutes of remarks
on a topic of your choice. You could expect an audience of 600 judges and
lawyers and the event would be covered by the local media.
You have already accepted speaking invitations for 23 May (D.C. Judicial
Conference) and 9 June (Arkansas Bar Association). In addition, we have
recommended that you introduce Dr. Land at the Security Affairs Support
Association dinner on 25 May and you are still considering an invitation to
speak at the 50th Country Day Reunion on 27 May in St. Louis. I recommend
that you decline this invitation and have attached a letter of regret for your
signature.

On June 1st the 1988 annual meeting of the
Delaware Bench and Bar Conference chaired by Chief
Justice Andrew D. Christie will take place near Wilming?
ton at noon. We would be honored and delighted if you
could attend and speak to us on a topic of your choice.
It would be very interesting to our bench and
bar to hear your views and experience as a former federal
judge in the direction of the FBI or the CIA, in particu?
lar relating to the balance between the protection of
individual liberties and the performance of the mission
of the agency. I sugpst this by way of example only,
since we would be delighted to hear your views on any
topic you wish to speak on.
Our Bench and Bar Conference is the single most
important meeting for Delaware lawyers, and our bar re?
mains sufficiently small and cohesive that almost all
active members attend. In the recent past we have been
honored by the presence of former Chief Justice Burger,
Justice O'Conner, as well as prominent figures from busi?
ness and government.
We have previously arrawd transportation to
and from Washington by private business aircraft, and I
