Dean of the University of Missouri Law School, Dale Whitman, has invited
you to'be the guest speaker at the Law Society Dinner on the weekend of
October 14, November 4, or November 11 in Columbia. The proposed format for
the black-tie dinner is l5 minutes of informal remarks. The Law Society is
made up of 60 members who have pledged at least $25,000 in gifts to the Law
School . f~lany of them are senior ~l awyers =wha-have -spent thea_r professional
career practicing in the state. (For further information see brochure
opposite.)
You also are asked to be the lecturer at 'the Earl F. Nelson lecture series
at the new Law School prior to the dinner. The suggested format for the
lecture.is 45 minutes of remarks followed by 15 minutes of questions and
answers. You could expect an audience of 250 law students and faculty. The
local media would be present.
Since you are already addressing the Law Day Society in St. Louis, I
recommend that you decline-this invitation. If you agree, attached is a

Dear Dean Whitman:
Thank you for your kind invitation to speak at the Law Society dinner and
for the opportunity of addressing your law students. Although it would please
me very much to speak to both groups next fall, I am unable to make a
commitment at this time and so must decline.
I wish you all the best for a successful program. Please give my regards
to the members of the Law Society.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Judge Webster:

Telephone (314) 882-3246
You~ll recall that we had hoped you could come to Columbia
this fall and be our guest for our annual Law Society dinner.
?Your -schedule-didn "-t .allow--you to do ?so, and I am writing-ir: t::e
hope of persuading you to be our guest next year at the same
event.
The Law Society is composed of our major donors -- those who
have committed to at least $25,000 in gifts. We presently have
60 members. The event is black tie, and we like to have it in as
elegant a setting as possib~~e (though in Columbia the choices are
not all that wide!). I am sure that you know many of the members
personally.
- -We--would like to~-have- you -give a brief talk - on the- order
of 15 minutes -- at the Law Society
Dinner.
If you are willing,
___.
_
we would also like to ask you to speak to the student body of the
law school during the afternoon preceding the dinner. This could
be an hour or so, and I can guarantee it would be very well
attended.
We have not set a date for this event, and would try to make
it fit with your schedule. ~ -We like -to hold -i-t on -a-Friday
evening preceding a Saturday home football game. The possible
dates for next fall. include:
October
14-15,
1988
(Iowa State game)
November
4-5,
1988
(Colorado game)
November
11-12, 1988
(Oklahoma game)
We would, of course, cover all your expenses and invite you
to the football game. I hope you can do it, and I~m certain you
would enjoy yourself immensely. Please let me know if you can
fit it into your plans. With best personal wishes.
Sincerely,
Dale A. Whitman
Dean
