RE: Speaking invitation
University Union
University of Virginia
Charlottesville, Virginia
Convenient Date
Co-Chairmen of the Speakers Committee of the University Union,
David Gallagher and Mark Goodin, have invited you to address a program
sponsored by the Union at the University of Virginia on a convenient date.
The suggested format is 30 minutes of remarks on a topic of your choice
followed by 30 minutes of questions and answers. You could expect an audience
of 500 - 1000 graduates, undergraduates, and faculty. The media would cover
the event.
The University Union, an arm of the University, sponsors all cultural
activities at the school. Their speakers' program provides students with the
opportunity to hear prominent men and women discuss national and international
issues.. Previous speakers have included former President Jimmy Carter,
Gloria Steinem and Jesse Jackson.
. Since you spoke at the University of Virginia Law School and spent several
days on campus in October 1986, I recommend that you decline this invitation.
If you agree, attached is a letter of regret for your signature.

The Speakers Committee of University Union of the University
of Virginia programs a wide range of prominent figures who offer
the student body educational experiences outside the classroom.
Our goal is to provide the University with a variety of speakers
who can use their personal knowledge and experience to enhance
that of the students.
In light of this purpose, we would like to invite you to
speak at the University. With the national events of the past
year, we believe you could offer our community the information
and perspective that it needs to fully understand recent issues.
We would, of course, cover all expenses and provide an
appropriate honorarium.
As your schedule is undoubtedly busy, we appreciate your
time in consideration of this invitation. We look forward to
hearing from you, and please feel free to contact us if you have
any questions or comments. Thank you again.
Sincerely,
J. David Gallagher
