invitation. If you agree, attached are letters for your signature.

We are writing to invite you to participate in a panel
discussion in the Forum of the Kennedy School of Government at
Harvard University on March 21, 1988. The discussion will focus
on public access to government information and the relationship
between access to information and the ongoing viability of our
democratic institutions. We envision that this discussion will
concentrate on broad topics within the scope of freedom of
information (i.e. Under what conditions may it be appropriate to
deny the public access to information? What kind of information,
if any, should be routinely denied? Does public access to
information add or detract from the efficient operation of our
government? What are the long-term consequences of government
secrecy?).
We have invited four speakers to participate in this
discussion. Marvin Kalb, Director of the Kennedy School's Joan
Shorenstein Barone Center for the Press,, Politics, and Public
Policy, will moderate. sent, we have firm commitments from
STAT ex-CIA employee and Kennedy School professor
Richard Haass. We have also invited Bob Woodward of the
Washington Post. We hope that~you will consider this invitation
and you will come to the Forum to participate in this discussion.
The Forum, situated in the John F. Kennedy School of
Government, is Harvard's center stage for political debates,
speeches and discussions. Recent speakers have included President
Oscar Arias, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, and former Presidents
Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, among the many. The Forum can
accommodate up to 850 people, with overflow capacity which reaches
1100. Our audience is composed of students, scholors, faculty,
and a broad cross section of the Harvard and Boston communities.
The program is taped and, with your permission, may be broadcast
on the National Public Radio network.
