Webster Director, CIA Washington, D.C. 20505 On behalf of the Catholic University Moot Court Association, I am honored to invite you to serve once again as a Justice for the final round of the 38th Annual Sutherland Cup Appellate Moot Court Competition to be held Saturday April 9th, 1988. The Sutherland Cup Competition, named after the Honorable Justice Sutherland, was first held on March 30th and 31st, 1950. It is the oldest interscholastic moot court competition in the nation. Catholic University, the host school, takes pride in the reputation for excellence in appellate advocacy attributed to the Sutherland Cup Competition over the years. The participants in this year's competition include representatives from Yale, University of Virginia, University of North Carolina, and Catholic University. Competitors will be presenting their cases as if they were arguing before the United States Supreme Court. Our goal is to give the competitors a realistic experience in order for them to improve their oral advocacy skills. It is for this reason that your presence would be invaluable in such a competition. Students in the past have benefited greatly from the feedback they have received from such distinguished panelists as yourself as well as the Honorable Justice White, the Honorable Justice Scalia, and the Honorable Robert H. Bork. Justices for the final round judge the competitors on their oral advocacy skills only. Briefs are scored by a distinguished panel of attorneys who have expertise in the area. Traditionally, the issue that is argued is one which has been granted certiorari or is a timely issue for which certiorari has been requested.
