Dear Mr. Wilson:
1 5 APR 1988,
I appreciate your invitation to address the American Newspaper Publishers
Association on April 26th. Unfortunately, I am unavailable on the 26th
because of a previous commitment which I cannot rearrange. However, I would
certainly have enjoyed speaking with your members and I appreciate your asking
me to join you in such a beautiful place as Honolulu. Please give my regards
to all your association members.
Best wishes for a successful convention.
Sincerely yours,
Is/ William H. Webster

In the outgoing, why can't we just
say he already has too many speech
commitments and would be unable to
accept rather than using the meeting
with a member of Congress. This
doesn't sound like much of a reason
for not accepting a speech commitment.
I'm open to any thoughts on the
reason for this line of thinking.

JUDGE:

RE: Speaking Invitation
American Newspaper Publishers Association
Honolulu, Hawaii
26 April 1988
Chairman of the American Newspaper Publishers Association (ANPA),
George W. Wilson, has invited you to be the keynote speaker at the luncheon on
Tuesday, 26 April. You could expect an audience of 3,000 newspaper
executives. ANPA has also invited representatives from Australia, Taiwan, The
People's Republic of China, the Soviet Union and Japan to speak at the
convention during their three-day program. You were invited last September
and then in March to address the ANPA Government Affairs Committee in
Washington, but both times you were scheduled to be overseas.
You already have five speaking engagements in the next three weeks
including an address for Law Day in St. Louis on 29 April. You also have a
breakfast scheduled with Senator Malcolm Wallop on the 26th. I recommend that
you decline this invitation and I have attached a letter of regret for your
signature.

Dear Judge Webster:
We are delighted that you are interested in joining
us at our Annual Convention in Honolulu, April 24-27.
This is the global event of the year for the newspaper
business -- about 3,000 newspaper executives will
attend.
Some of last year's program participants included:
President Reagan; First Lady Nancy Reagan; President
Carter; Senators Dole, Hart and Hatch; Representatives
Fascell and Frank; Cyrus Vance; Abraham Sofaer; William
French Smith; Stansfield Turner and Jean J. Kirkpatrick.
We would be honored if you would accept our invitation
to keynote our Luncheon on Tuesday, April 26. Program
plans call for presentations by the most senior repre-
sentatives of government and commerce from Australia;
Taiwan, The People's Repulblic of China, The Soviet
Union and Japan.
I have enclosed our new brochure that will give you
background on ANPA as well as a copy of the June 1987
issue of presstime, the ANPA journal, which features
our 100th Anniversary Convention in New York City.
In addition, I have enclosed a copy of our Program
in Brief which gives an overview of the entire 1988
Convention.
We hope you can work this invitation into your schedule.
Enclosures
Sincerely yours,
