Wilson Chai man American Newspaper Publishers Association Box 17407 Dulles Airport Washington, D.C. 22091 Dear Mr. Wilson: 1 5 APR 1988, I appreciate your invitation to address the American Newspaper Publishers Association on April 26th. Unfortunately, I am unavailable on the 26th because of a previous commitment which I cannot rearrange. However, I would certainly have enjoyed speaking with your members and I appreciate your asking me to join you in such a beautiful place as Honolulu. Please give my regards to all your association members. Best wishes for a successful convention. Sincerely yours, Is/ William H. Webster William H. This doesn't sound like much of a reason for not accepting a speech commitment. I'm open to any thoughts on the reason for this line of thinking. Wilson, has invited you to be the keynote speaker at the luncheon on Tuesday, 26 April. You could expect an audience of 3,000 newspaper executives. ANPA has also invited representatives from Australia, Taiwan, The People's Republic of China, the Soviet Union and Japan to speak at the convention during their three-day program. You were invited last September and then in March to address the ANPA Government Affairs Committee in Washington, but both times you were scheduled to be overseas. You already have five speaking engagements in the next three weeks including an address for Law Day in St. Louis on 29 April. You also have a breakfast scheduled with Senator Malcolm Wallop on the 26th. I recommend that you decline this invitation and I have attached a letter of regret for your signature.
