This fulfills the commitment made to Chairman Stokes at last week's meeting with the House Intelligence Committee leadership. 1989 -- The Comptroller's office is preparing appeals of Authorization Committee actions on the FY 1989 budget. These appeals will be sent to the Committees early next week as background for staff discussions in preparation for the Authorization Conference. 1990-91 -- The Deputy Comt;troller briefed the Agency's Information Systems Board on planned investments for communications and computer processing in FY 1990-91. -- The Comptroller's office is meeting with appropriate Agency elements to discuss the IG report on leasing vs. purchasing computer equipment. Key .parts of the IG report, which was directed by the House Appropriations Committee, will be summarized in a report to the Intelligence and Appropriations Committees. Buckley. D/PAO and~C/Media Relations attended the 5th Annual Aspen Journalists Conference where the DDCI spoke to 27 journalists concerned with the INF treaty and the Mosco~v~surimit. -Background briefings were arranged for Cord Meyer, the Wall Street'Journal, Time, and U.S. News and World Report on Afghanistan, the Wall Street Journal on Iraq and U.S. le and World Report on the Summit. Executive Appearances and Invitations ~ ~- The DCI addressed the William F. Buckley Memorial Service in Arlington Cemetery on Friday, 13 May for approximately 60 mourners:" The ceremony was a combined military and No Greater Love service. According to the Chairman of No Greater Love, Carmella LaSpada, the Director's remarks were personal and supportive which left a "positive feeling" with the Buckley family. Ms. LaSpada reported how pleased the family, the organization and all the participants were with the Agency's cooperation. "In fact," she said, "I reported to the media how supportive and cooperative the Agency has been." We are preparing a package of media highlights and TV clips for the Buckley family. The Director received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Rockhurst College on Sunday, 15 May in Independence, Missouri before an audience of 4500 students, faculty, family and friends. A staff member from the college reported "how much the graduates were inspired by the DCI's remarks and that his appearance made commencement very special. The Director's remarks were appropriate and well chosen." According to college representatives, the audience of 4500 "strongly applauded."
