Gates Deputy Director for Intelligence SUBJECT: DDI Activity Report 16-20 December 1985 DCI/DDCI Assigned Tasks ALA prepared talking points for the DCI on Mexican political conditions and prospects and on Soviet/surrogate (Cuban) support to Third World subversives. OEA prepared talking points on recent election developments in the Philippines, on the military situation in Cambodia, and on domestic and political developments in Thailand for meetings with Admiral Poindexter and Secretary Weinberger. SOVA prepared talking points for the DCI on the implications of Gorbachev's industrial modernization program Policy Support ALA met with NSC staffers to discuss South American issues, briefed Philip Hughes of the NSC on the economic and political situation in Mexico, and prepared a typescript assessing the first year and a half of Ecuadoran President Febres-Cordero's administration for NSC staffer Jackie Tillman. ALA also participated in an interagency briefing on Angola for Assistant Secretary of State Crocker and prepared a memorandum on prospects for an election challenge in Honduras for Donald Gregg, Assistant to Vice President Bush. 25X1 25X1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/18: CIA-RDP90G01359R000200050009-4 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/18: CIA-RDP90GO1359R000200050009-4 OSWR briefed several Department of Defense officials including: Andy Marshall, Director of Net Assessments, and Paul. Berenson on Soviet techniques for forecasting future military systems and charting east-west military-technical competition; Don Latham, on the Dome of Light phenomenon; Dr. Woodruff OGI representatives met with Don Eiss, Deputy Assistant US Trade Representative, to discuss international trade in high technology. OGI briefed Ambassador Morris Draper, outgoing Consul General to Jerusalem, on Israeli settlement activities and land seizures in the West Bank, and on Israeli activities in East Jerusalem; and Ambassador to the Kingdom of Lesotha, Shirley Abbott, on the narcotics situation in Lesotha, Swaziland and South Africa. OGI also briefed officials of the Department of Energy on potential threats to nuclear sites from conventional terrorist ordnance. OCR analysts met with Dr. George A. Keyworth, the President's Science Advisor, who presented his impressions of Chinese S&T and defense officials. He commented favorably on OCR's reports 25X1 OCR and SOVA analysts met with Ambassador Jack Matlick at the NSC regarding the Summit. He was complimentary of the briefing books President and Mrs. Reagan received and said they were pleased with the video bios on General Secretary and Mrs. Gorbachev. OCR and SOVA analysts also debriefed Commerce Secretary Baidrige on his recent visit to Moscow. SOVA representatives, together with the NIO/USSR, met with the Principal Deputy for Program Analysis and Evaluation, Office of the Secretary of Defense, and members of his staff, to discuss techniques for estimating the value of US and Soviet military stocks. He spoke on "Prospects for Continuity." Briefings on the Hill Iraq. There were 5 briefings on the Hill this past week.
