SOVA provided the DCI with a typescript chronology of the Chernobyl' accident, and with information on Soviet aid to Nicaragua for an upcoming speech. EURA provided a number of short papers to the DCI for his trip to Europe. Policy Support At the request of Deputy Assistant Secretary Suddarth, NESA wrote a typescript memorandum on the Lebanese militia leadership. NESA also prepared a typescript for DoD on Gandhi's cabinet changes. OEA prepared for Secretary Shultz a typescript version of an IA done on the Philippine economy. The same typescript was also provided to Congressman Robert Torricelli of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. OEA briefed the outgoing JUSMAG, Gen. Teeter, on political and economic developments in the Philippines. OCR briefed Deputy US Trade Representative Michael Smith on the economic and trade policy making apparatus in the Philippines. OCR also briefed Peter Allgeier, Assistant USTR for Asia and the Pacific, on trade policy makers in the Philippines and in Korea. EURA analysts briefed Under Secretary Armacost on developments in Italy and Yugoslavia for his trip to those countries. OSWR briefed NRC Commissioner Bernthol on the radiological consequences of the Chernobyl' nuclear accident. William Donovan, visited the CIA Library and the Historical Intelligence Collection. He gave HIC a sizeable collection of Gen. Donovan's memorabilia for permanent retention. ACIS, along with NIO/SP and NIO/FDA, completed a memorandum concerning the proper classification of imagery products. OSWR secretaries attended a 2-day seminar, "To See Ourself Better," conducted by Clemson University in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. OGI geographers met with Edward Toth, USAID, and Peter Freeman, a consultant of USAID, to discuss desertification in Africa. A SOVA analyst met with) (Columbia University and Haverford College to review SOVA's work on the Soviet automotive industry and to discuss transportation issues. SOVA sponsored a conference at Airlie House on political- military relations under Gorbachev. A EURA analyst attended a conference at the Wilson Center on how better to promote East European studies in the United States. Attendees included businessmen and academics. SOVA analysts took part in a discussion at the State Department with visiting PRC academic experts on Soviet policy toward Asia. D/NESA, and NESA and OSWR analysts briefed Congressman Solarz on Pakistan's internal developments A NESA analyst briefed Congressman Porter on populations and political stability issues in the NESA region. D/ALA and ALA analysts briefed the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Subcommittee on African Affairs, on Liberia. ALA analysts briefed House Foreign Affairs Committee staffers on South African issues, and on Angola and Ethiopia. ALA analysts also briefed Congressman Presser on Third World population issues and political instability. OEA, along with NI0/EA, briefed Senators Heinz, Bradley, Sarbanes, and Tribble in preparation for their China trip. EURA East European analysts briefed Representative Phil Crane on Romanian issues for his upcoming trip. OSWR briefed staff members of the House Armed Services Sea Power Subcommittee.
