Intelligence analysts from CIA, DIA and State/INR briefed Congressional staff members on Soviet LRINF forces and capabilities on 30 September 1987, 1000 to 1230 hours at SNOB 219. This was the second briefing of a series to review Soviet military strategy and capablities in preparation for arms control treaty considerations by the Congress. 2. Congressional staff members atttending were the following: SSCI - Dave Holliday, George Tenet, John Despres, Ed Levine, Jim Dykstra, Gary Sojka, Jeanne McNaughton, Regina Genton, Mike Mattingly, Marvin Ott, and Keith Hall. Fred Ward prepared the unofficial transcript. 3. The briefing followed the topics listed on the attachment for each of the four briefers. Out of the discussion, several other highlights should be mentioned. -D/ACIS in response to a question mentioned that the Intelligence Community would be evaluating data in an MOU to be exchanged with the Soviets at Geneva about 9 October. If the Congressional staffs want - Gary Sojka of SSCI requested raw data to e matter with Soik-a. The undersigned will discuss - The Congressional staff asked for copies of the viewgraphs used by the briefers. ACIS will review the material and obtain clearances for passage of appropriate material via OCA. - John Keliher of HPSCI requested information on the SS-23 -- the "dog missile" in the Soviet arsenal. The briefers will incorporate this information into a future meeting, probably on 23 October.
