SUBJECT: DI Support to the Congress
The Directorate of Intelligence plays a major role in
providing substantive intelligence support to the Congress. In
1986, for example, we provided nearly 600 briefings and over
3,500 documents to the Hill. The scope of our efforts ranges
from providing unclassified biographic material to
Congressional delegations traveling abroad to providing highly
sensitive assessments on topics as diverse as prospects for
Afghanistan, third world debt, Soviet military capabilities,
and arms control verification. Our customers include Members
of the Senate and House and those staffers with appropriate
security clearances. We also support Congressional Committees,
with our major efforts focused on the Senate Select Committee
on Intelligence, the House Permanent Select Committee on
Intelligence, the Defense Subcommittees of the two
Appropriations Committees, both Armed Services Committees, and
the Senate Foreign Relations and House Foreign Affairs
Committees. The Directorate has a reputation for unbiased and
objective reporting on the Hill, which in part accounts for the
extensive support we are called on to provide.
