,The Comptroller General has expressed interest in having GAO

examine the justification for the U.S. military
answer this question we need to obtain information on tlie nature of
the threat and comparisons between the military capabilities of
North and South Korea.
We would like to interview CIA officials regarding the above.
Specifically, we would like to get CIA assessments on (1) the
nature and the extent of the threat posed by North Korea, (2) the
military balance between the North and South, and (3) capabilities
of the North and South military forces. We would also like to
obtain the CIA's opinion on whether ROK forces are currently
capable of deterring an initial attack from the North without
existing U.S. forces currently in South Korea.
During the assignment's initial phase we identified a list of CIA
documents that would be useful in our review. We would like to
request the following documents:
GAO members on the assignment are Albert B. Huntington, III,
