BERMAN 26TH DISTRICT, CALIFORNIA December 14, 1988 The.Honorable William H. Webster Director of Central Intelligence Washington D.C. 20505 Dear Mr. Webster: 137 CANNON HOUSE OFFICE BUILDING WASHINGTON, DC 20515 (zo2(z2s-4s9s 14600 ROSCOE BOULEVARD #506 PANORAMA CITY, CA 91402 (6161 69 t-0543 (B 181 764-1206 Over the course of. the last several years, the extent of the proliferation of dangerous technologies in the Middle East has become all too apparent. Of particular concern -- in part because of the conduct of the Iran-Iraq war -- have been the acquisition and employment of increasingly sophisticated ballistic missiles and chemical weapons. It is our intention to broaden our knowledge and understanding of the extent and implications of the proliferation of these technologies in the region. In that regard, we would like to initiate a series of briefings with the appropriate intelligence officers to inform ourselves of the current state of affairs. We hope that such an initiation will make us better partners to the executive branch with whom we hope to work closely in the coming years in pursuing a common nonproliferation policy. Enclosed is a series of questions the answers to which we expect will provide a good foundation for this undertaking. In order to work out details of the briefings, please have your staff contact Lise Hartman at 225-4695. We look forward to your response. Sincerely, MEL I4~VINE Member of Congress HLB/lh ARD L.
