Walt Barrows will attend a coordinating committee meeting of the
President's Initiative to End Hunger in Africa. (NIO/Africa)
Bill Kotapish has formed a DCI Counternarcotics Intelligence Review
Committee which will examine the Agency's current program and make
recommendations by 15 July. (Nb O for Counternarcotics)
Larry Gershwin met with Director Fletcher, of the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA), on his interests in the draft NIE: Soviet Space
Programs. -Fletcher expressed interest in developing a joint briefing with
WIOISP that would be a follow-on to last year's briefing to the President and
National Security Council on a comparison of the US and Soviet civil space
program. (NIO for Strategic Programs)
Estimates and Intelligence Memoranda
The fluid military situation in northern Somalia that caused President Siad
to postpone visiting Washington dictates some revision of the content and
scheduling of Somalia: Prospects for Stability and US Interests. (NIO/Africa)
Carl Ford chaired the first meeting of a Philippine Military Analysts
Working Group tasked with examining military developments in the Philippines in
more depth; the group plans to prepare an IIM containing its findings some time
in early 1989. (NIO/East Asia)
Guidance to the Intelligence Community
Marty Roeber spoke on the volatile situation in Panama to CIA employees in
the Headquarters Auditorium. (NIO/Latin America)
