NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON DRUG ABUSE
Presents
DRUGS AT WORK
Drugs At Work is the first program in a four part videotape series on drug abuse in the
workplace. A 23 minute educational documentary which provides an overview of the
problem, it describes the costs of drug use for the workplace, the individual and the
public, and examines the action being taken by government and private companies to
combat this problem. It will be followed later this year by programs on employee
assistance, drug testing and prevention and education. Each title in the series will be
available in both an employer and an employee version, in VHS format.
Drugs At Work promotes awareness of the important issues involved and provides valuable
information for the development of effective workplace programs to address the problem
of drug abuse on the job. Policy development, drug testing, employee assistance programs
and prevention and education are discussed.
Drugs At Work takes a personal approach, presenting interviews with those who best
understand the dimensions of the problem and what can be done about it. Rehabilitated
drug users, including a physician, a law enforcement officer and a welder, tell their own
stories of drug use on the job. Experts like Dr. Herbert Kleber of Yale and James
Mahoney of the AFL-CIO discuss the physical and economic effects. Government and
industry representatives including Dr. J. Michael Walsh, Director of NIDA's Office of
?
Workplace Initiatives and Daniel Burke, President of Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. describe
federal and corporate workplace programs currently underway.
Drugs At Work is an important program for all levels in the workplace, from top
management to line staff. It is designed to be used as part of an agency's drug abuse
education initiative. Its length makes it ideal for use in a one hour program that stresses
the agency's own efforts to combat drug use in the workplace.
