1. (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: ELEMENTS OF THE SOVIET MOTORIZED RIFLE
REGIMENT (MRR) HAVE FORMED CONVOYS IN PREPARATION FOR DEPARTURE.
2. (SWN) REMARKS: MRR ELEMENTS ASSEMBLED IN CONVOYS INCLUDE FOUR
MR COMPANIES (CO), ONE TANK CO, ELEMENTS OF TWO 122MM HOWITZER
D-30 BATTERIES, ONE BMP ARMORED PERSONNEL CARRIER-EQUIPPED
RECONNAISSANCE ELEMENT, ASSAULT ENGINEER ELEMENTS, AND 35
TRUCKS/SUPPORT VEHICLES. APPROXIMATELY 300 PERSONNEL ARE IN-
FORMATION IN FRONT OF THE CONVOYS. THE PRESENCE OF ENGINEERING
EQUIPMENT, INCLUDING ONE MINE CLEARING TANK, INDICATES THAT
THIS UNIT IS PREPARING TO CONDUCT OPERATIONS OUTSIDE THE
IMMEDIATE GHAZNI AREA.
(SWN) GHAZNI IS 40 NM SOUTHWEST OF KABUL IN EAST-CENTRAL
AFGHANISTAN.
