1. (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: FIRST IDENTIFICATION OF A T-72 TANK AT
THIS BARRACKS. -
2. (SHIN) REMARKS: THE T-72 MEDIUM TANK IS PARKED WITH AN
UNIDENTIFIED MEDIUM TANK, A VIJAYANTA TANK, AND HEAVY-LIFT
TRANSPORTERS IN A PROBABLE TEMPORARY RECEIVING/HOLDING AREA.
THE TANKS WERE PROBABLY OFFLOADED RANSLOADING AREA
AT SURATGARI1 RR STA YD A SHOP 25X1
(SWN) T-72 TANKS HAVE NOT BEEN SEEN AT THESE BARRACKS BEFORE.
THE PRESENCE OF THIS TANK NEXT TO THE UNIDENTIFIED MEDIUM TANK
AND THE VIJAYANTA TANK INDICATES THESE TANKS MAY HAVE BEEN
BROUGHT HERE FOR FAMILIARIZATION/DISPLAY PURPOSES. T-72 TANKS
ARE OPERATIONALLY DEPLOYED AT ONLY ONE GARRISON IN INDIA
BABINA BARRACKS AND BRIGADE HEADQUARTERS WHICH 25X1
HOUSES MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THE 31ST ARMORED DIVISION. BABINA IS
APPROXIMATELY 350 NM SOUTHEAST OF SURATGARH.
(SWN) SURATGARH, APPROXIMATELY 50 NtM FROM THE INDIA-PAKISTAN
BORDER, HOUSES MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THE 24TH INFANTRY DIVISION,
10TH CORPS, WESTERN MILITARY COMMAND.
