1. (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: AN ETHIOPIAN INFANTRY BRIGADE HAS
RECENTLY BEEN DEPLOYED TO THE TOWN OF MEKELE IN TIGRAY
PROVINCE IN NORTHERN ETHIOPIA.
2. (SWN) REMARKS: I _I AN INFANTRY 25X1
BRIGADE WAS NEWLY IDENTIFIED IN A BIVOUAC AREA IMMEDIATELY
SOUTHEAST OF ALULA ABA NEGA AIRFIELD THIS 25X1
BIVOUAC CONSISTED OF APPROXIMATELY 900 TWO-b1AN TENTS THAT
HAD BEEN ERECTED SINCE 16 NOVEMBER. NO GROUND FORCE
WEAPONS OR EQUIPMENT WERE PRESENT IN THE AREA.
(SWN) THIS BRIGADE HAS PROBABLY BEEN DEPLOYED TO MEKELE TO
STRENGTHEN ETHIOPIAN POSITIONS IN TIGRAY AGAINST AN
INCREASING LEVEL OF ACTIVITY BY THE INSURGENT FORCES OF THE
TIGREAN PEOPLES LIBERATION FRONT. MEKELE IS THE CAPITAL OF
TIGRAY AND SERVES AS A MAJOR ETHIOPIAN MILITARY GARRISON IN
THE PROVINCE.
