1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: A NEW MOTORIZED RIFLE DIVISION (MRD) HAS
BEEN FORMED IN THE MONGOLIAN PEOPLES ARMY (MPA). THIS IS A
SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE SUBSTANTIAL UPGRADING UNDERWAY IN THE
MPA.

2. (S/D) REMARKS: A TANK REGIMENT, TWO MOTORIZED RIFLE REGIMENTS
(MRR), A POSSIBLE MRR, AND SUPPORT UNITS WERE IDENTIFIED AT A
NEW MPA BARRACKS AT ERDENETIYN. ARTILLERY AND OTHER EQUIPMENT
WERE IN A RAIL-SERVED, PROBABLE RECEIVING AREA. THE GARRISON
IS SPREAD OUT IN NON-CONTIGUOUS VEHICLE PARKS WHICH IS TYPICAL
OF THE BARRACKS BELONGING TO THE MPA.
(S/D) ANALYST'S COMMENTS: THE MPA IS IN THE PROCESS OF
SUBSTANTIALLY UPGRADING ITS FORCES. THIS IS THE THIRD MRD
IDENTIFIED WITH THE MPA. THE OTHER TWO AT DZUUN BAYAN AND
ULAANBAATAR WERE UPGRADED FROM MOTORIZED RIFLE BRIGADES TO
DIVISIONS BETWEEN 1979 AND 1981 . AN ARTILLERY BRIGADE AND A
PROBABLE MULTIPLE ROCKET LAUNCHER REGIMENT WERE IDENTIFIED AT
ULAANBAATAR AL-4 IN AUGUST 1980 AND MAY 1982, RESPECTIVELY.
