NEW GROUND FORCE UNIT
MATOLA MILITARY INSTALLATION, MOZAMBIQUE
1. (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: A NEW PROBABLE BRIGADE-SIZED UNIT WAS
IDENTIFIED 2 NM SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF MATOLA AND 11 NM
NORTHWEST OF MAPUTO.
2. (SWN) REMARKS: THE FACILITY APPEARED TO BE IN MID-STAGE
OF CONSTRUCTION AND CONSISTED OF AT LEAST 19 BARRACKS
(11 UNDER CONSTRUCTION), ONE LARGE SHED, AT LEAST 18
SUPPORT BUILDINGS (FOUR UNDER CONSTRUCTION), A LARGE
VEHICLE PARKING AREA, AND APPROXIMATELY 100 TENTS. THE
SITE OF THE FACILITY IS AN OVAL-SHAPED CLEARING WITH
DEFENSIVE POSITIONS ALONG THE PERIMETER. EQUIPMENT IN THE
ASSOCIATED VEHICLE PARK INCLUDED 11 PROBABLE BMP, 30
ARMORED VEHICLES, SIX TRUCKS, FOUR GSP AMPHIBIOUS HEAVY
FERRIES, AND AT LEAST 68 ADDITIONAL VEHICLES/PIECES OF
EQUIPMENT.
(SWN) ANALYST'S COMMENTS: THE BMP HAS NOT BEEN PREVIOUSLY
SEEN DEPLOYED WITH MOZAMBIQUE'S ARMED LY
OTHER OBSERVATION OF BMP IN MOZAMBIQUE IN THE
TPAAIQCUTPMFWT AREA AT NEARBY MAPUTO PORT FACILITIES
THE ONLY PREVIOUS SIGHTING OF BMP IN
SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA. HAD BEEN IN ETHIOPIA, WHERE IT IS WITH
CUBAN
