1. (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: THE TYPHOON SSBN WAS OBSERVED UNDERWAY IN
THE WHITE SEA AND WAS PROBABLY INVOLVED IN SOUND TRIALS.
2. (SWN) REMARKS: THE TYPHOON NUCLEAR POWERED BALLISTIC MISSILE
SUBMARINE (SSBN) WAS OBSERVED UNDERWAY ON THE SURFACE AT 0902Z
ON AT 65-56-38N 035-54-28E. IT WAS APPROXIMATELY 25X1
42NM SOUTHEAST OF THE KANDALAKSHSKIY ZALIV SOUND TRIALS RANGE
AND APPROXIMATELY 130NM NORTHWEST OF 25X1
SEVERODVINSK SHIPYARD 402 25X1
(SWN) THE TYPHOON SSBN WAS AT THE MISSILE LOADING FACILITY AT
SEVERODVINSK NAVAL BASE WEST 125X1
THE TYPHOON CONDUCTED ITS THIRD AND FOURTH AT-SEA 25X1
FIRINGS OF THE SS-NX-20 MISSILE. THE TYPHOON SSBN 25X1
HAD RETURNED TO ITS NORMAL BERTH AT SEVERODVINSK SHIPYARD 402.

IRANIAN AND IRAQI CANAL CONSTRUCTION
AL BASRAH AREA
1 . (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: IRANIAN AND I CONSTRUCTION
IN THE AL BASRAH AREA WAS OBSERVED
(GRAPHIC 1)
2. (SWN) REMARKS: IRANIAN FORCES HAD COMPLETED THE
CONSTRUCTION OF A 15 NM CANAL BY 25 AUGUST, IN AN ATTEMPT
TO DRAIN THE IRAQI DEFENSIVE WATER BARRIER EAST OF THE
SHATT AL ARAB (GRAPHIC 2). HOWEVER, THE SIZE OF THIS
DRAINAGE CANAL IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO REMOVE ENOUGH WATER TO
REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE WATER BARRIER.
(SWN)( (IRAQI FORCES WERE OBSERVED OPENING A
THIRD PEEPER CANAL FROM TIME SHATT AL ARAB TO THE DEFENSIVE
WATER BARRIER (GRAPHIC 3). THIS NEW CANAL WAS 6 NM IN
LENGTH AND ADJACENT TO AN EXISTING FEEDER CANAL. THE
COMPLETION OF THIS NEW CANAL WILL GREATLY INCREASE THE
VOLUME OF WATER PUMPED INTO THE DEFENSIVE WATER BARRIER.
(SWN) ADDITIONALLY, IRAQI FORCES WERE CONSTRUCTING A 1.5 NM
CANAL, EXTENDING EAST FROM THE DEFENSIVE WATER BARRIER
(GRAPHIC 4). WHEN COMPLETE, THIS CANAL WILL ENABLE THE
IRAQIS TO FLOOD ADDITIONAL LAND ALONG THE FORWARD EDGE OF
THE BATTLE AREA.
