NEW SONAR DOME ON ROMEO SS
ZHANJIA , CHINA
1. (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: A BOW-MOUNTED SONAR DOME HAS BEEN
CONFIRMED ON A ROMEO DIESEL ATTACK SUBMARINE (SS). THE
PRESENCE OF THE DOME INDICATES THAT THE CHINESE HAVE
DEVELOPED AN IMPROVED SONAR FOR THE ROMEO SS.
2. (SWN) REMARKS: THE ROMEO SS WAS ON THE MARINE
RAILWAY AT ZHANJIANG SHIPYARD NORTH, PROBABLY FOR
REPAIRS/MAINTENANCE. THE PORT SIDE OF THE ROMEO SS HULL
BELOW THE WATERLINE WAS VISIBLE, REVEALING A BULBOUS SONAR
DOME MOUNTED ON THE LOWER PORTION OF THE BOW. THE DOME
EXTENDED TO THE SIDE AND FORWARD OF THE BOW. A SECOND
ROMEO SS, WHICH WAS ON THE REPAIRWAYS, APPEARED TO HAVE A
SIMILAR BULBOUS SHAPE ON THE LOWER BOW; HOWEVER, DUE TO THE
SUBMARINE'S SHADOW, IT COULD NOT BE CONFIRMED.
(SWN) THIS IS THE SECOND CONFIRMED MODIFICATION BY THE
CHINESE TO IMPROVE THE SONAR CAPABILITY OF THE ROMEO SS,
THE OTHER BEING THE THREE BLADE-SHAPED SONAR HOUSINGS THAT
WERE IDENTIFIED ON A ROMEO SS AT XIAOPING DAO SUBMARINE
BASE
