POSSIBLE LOW ALTITUDE RADAR EQUIPMENT
NIKOLAYEV PORT FACILTTIES SOUTH, USSR
1. (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: AT LEAST ONE POSSIBLE CLAM SHELL LOW
ALTITUDE ACQUISITION RADAR AND A TRANSPORTABLE ELECTRONICS
TOWER (TET) ARE WITH THE SA-5 SURFACE-TO-AIR MISSILE EQUIPMENT
REMAINING AT NIKOLAYEV PORT FACILITIES SOUTH.
2. (SWN) REMARKS: THE CLAM SHELL RADAR IS A STATE-OF-THE-ART
SOVIET LOW ALTITUDE ACQUISITION RADAR, AND COMBINED WITH THE
TET HAS PREVIOUSLY BEEN OBSERVED ONLY IN THE SOVIET UNION
ASSOCIATED WITH THE SA-10 SAM SYSTEM. THE FACT THAT THE CLAM
SHELL RADAR AND THE TET ARE IN THIS AREA SUGGESTS THAT THIS
RADAR EQUIPMENT IS INTENDED FOR EXPORT TO SYRIA.
(SWN) THIS RADAR EQUIPMENT WOULD SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE THE LOW
ALTITUDE ACQUISITION CAPABILITIES OF THE DEFENSES FOR THE SA-5
COMPLEXES IN SYRIA.
