KAMPUCHEA 1. (SWN) SIGNIFICANCE: THIS REFUGEE CAMP HAS BEEN SEVERELY DAMAGED 2. (SWN) REMARKS: A LARGE NUMBER OF STRUCTURES AT THIS CAMP HAVE APPARENTLY BEEN DESTROYED BY FIRE WHILE OTHERS APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN REMOVED. APPROXIMATELY 10 MAJOR STRUCTURES AND SEVERAL HUNDRED DWELLINGS/SHACKS HAVE APPARENTLY BEEN DESTROYED BY FIRE IN AN AREA NORTH AND WEST OF THE HOSPITAL COMPLEX. THE HOSPITAL COMPLEX, AT LEAST FIVE OTHER MAJOR STRUCTURES, AND HUNDREDS OF DWELLINGS/SHACKS SOUTHWEST OF THE HOSPITAL COMPLEX APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN REMOVED. THE TWENTY LARGE TENTS/STRUCTURES BEING USED FOR PERSONNEL PROCESSING RE STILL 25X1 PRESENT. (SWN) ASIDE FROM THE BURNED AREA NORTH AND WEST OF THE HOSPITAL COMPLEX NO OTHER EVIDENCE OF HOSTILE ACTIVITY IS OBSERVED. NO TRACKED VEHICLE ACTIVITY, BOMB OR SHELL CRATERS, OR OTHER INDICATORS OF MILITARY ACTIVITY ARE DISCERNIBLE, ALTHOUGH RECENT REPORTING INDICATES THAT VIETNAMESE FORCES BACKED BY ARMOR AND ARTILLERY ATTACKED AND OCCUPIED THIS CAMP ON THE DAMAGE AND DESTRUCTION WITHIN THE CAMP APPEARS 25X1 TO HAVE BEE RESTRICTED TO THE CIVILIAN PORTIONS. NO DAMAGE IS DISCERNIBLE TO THE DEFENSIVE POSITIONS SURROUNDING THE CAMP WHICH REPORTEDLY ARE MANNED BY THE KHMER PEOPLE'S NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT. ONLY ONE POSSIBLE VEHICLE IS OBSERVED WITHIN THE CAMP. THE THAI DEFENSIVE POSITIONS NORTH OF THE CAMP ARE STILL OCCUPIED AND NO DAMAGE TO THEM IS DISCERNIBLE. (SWN) AT LEAST 15 TRUCKS ARE ON THE THAILAND SIDE OF THE ANTITANK DITCH JUST NORTH OF THE REFUGEE CAMP AND NUMEROUS TEMPORARY DWELLINGS AND PERSONNEL ARE IN THE VICINITY OF THE ANTITANK DITCH ON THE KAMPUCHEAN SIDE. THESE DWELLINGS AND PERSONNEL WERE NOT PRESENT (SWN) BAN NONG CHAN REFUGEE CAMP IS 9 NM NORTH OF POIPET, KAMPUCHEA, AND 12 NM NORTH-NORTHEAST OF ARANYAPRATHET, THAILAND.
