Severa boards in the Data General mini-computer were reseated and in 1. During .a two-week period, 4 February - 18 February 1987, the Federal Automated Requisition Reporting System (FARS) mini-computer (Data General) was unable to communicate with the Headquarters Datex system. Upon investigation, as to the cause 1 Communication Equipment Room (CER) several 2. On 10 and 12 March 1987 at approximately 1530 hours another communication problem occurred. In discussion with OIT, we were informed that the line that was allocated to the FARS system had been disabled for testing and was activated on 12 March 1987 at 1030 hours. While this problem did not cause communication boards were replaced. too much hardship, I believe that this situation should n~ occur without coordinating with the user of the system. 3. While we do not have a clear understanding of the cause. of these communication problems, we do recognize the need for a alternative method of communication when failure such as this occurs. Therefore, we would solicit your help in exploring the feasibility of identifying an alternative communication line that could be brought on line immediately, so that our FARS transmission could continue with minimal interruption, while the appropriate service technician was exploring the cause of the communication problem.
