CIA Director Charges NBC
PETER JENNINGS: The CIA
Director, William Casey,
charged today that an NBC News
report about U.S. submarine
activities violated a law
against disclosing information
about communications intelli-
gence. Mr. Casey said he's
referring the matter to the
Justice Department.
NBC reported that accused
spy Ronald Pelton may have
given the Soviets information
about a sensitive project
called Ivy Bells. The network
identified Ivy Bells as an
underwater eavesdropping
operation by American sub-
marines inside Soviet harbors.
NBC says it has referred Mr.
Casey's allegations to legal
counsel for review.
