Chewning,
60, a retired analyst with the Cen-
tral Intelligence Agency who was
chairman of the board of deacons at
the National City Christian Church,
red of a cerebral hemorrhage Dec.

bital.
.-Mr. Chewning was a lieutenant in
the Metropolitan Police Reserve
torps and a retired major in the
Army Reserves who had served in
the China-Burma-India theater dur-
ing World War U. At the time of his
death, he was a security official
*ith the Advanced Systems Corp.
At his church, he helped coordi-
nate security with the White House
during the presidency of Lyndon B.
Johnson, who was a member there.
I Mr. Chewning was born in Rich-
inond and had lived in Washington
since childhood. After his Army ser-
vice in the war, he graduated from
Lynchburg College. He joined the
[IA in 1952 and retired in 1973..
He then returned to active duty
tout Army for a short period.
About 1975, he became an analyst
for the Planning Research Corp.
About 1982, he joined the security
?taff of the Neiman-Marcus depart-
ment store. He joined Advanced
Systems in 1984.
Mr. Chewning was a past master
of Hope Masonic Lodge No. 20 and
a- commander of the Capitol Hill
chapter of the Disabled American
Veterans. He was a member of the
Association of Former Intelligence
Officers, the Reserve Law Officers
Association of America and the Fra-
ternal Order of Police.
Survivors include his wife, June,
of Washington; two children, Peter,
of Kearny, NJ., and Pamela, of
Washington; his mother, Gladys W.
Salisbury of Delray Beach, Fla., and'
one brother, Thomas W. Chewning
of Key Biscayne, Fla.
