Mr. James D. Squires
Editor, Editorial Page
CHICAGO TRIBUNE
435 North Michigan Avenue
Chicago, IL 60611
1 August 1986
Dear Mr. Squires:
The underlined portion of the TRIBUNE's 1 August
editorial: "Spy law: A Good Idea Goes Bad" misrepresents
Director Casey's concerns regarding the publication of
information which damages the U.S. Intelligence Community's
collection capabilities.
I am also enclosing for your background, and that of the
writer of the editorial, a copy of 18 USC 798, the law which
concerns the disclosure and printing of classified
communications intelligence, and Director Casey's interview
with the WASHINGTON JOURNALISM REVIEW on "National Security and
the Press." I hope they will prove enlightening.
Sincerely,
Enclosures
As Stated
