1. Informed the Director that certain people in the State Dept. had indicated
that they felt that General Vandenberg had knifed the State Dept. intelligence set-up
in his testimony before the House Appropriations Committee, and that therefore the
Director might hear rumors on this or receive a knifing in return before the Senate
Appropriations Committee, and that he should be prepared. accordingly.
Also informed the Director that when Admiral Sherman was being hard pressed by
the House Expenditures Committee regarding the possibility of the CIG developing into
a Gestapo, I raised the question with Admiral Robbins regarding the possibility of
amending Section 202 to include a prohibition against CIG performing any police or
domestic security functions. The Director concurred, should this be necessary.
2. Drafted letter informing Cong. Henderson H. Carson (R.,0.), that
is. reporting for duty with CIG. Sent on 9 may.
3. Interviewed who was referred by office of Rep. George
Bates, (R.,Mass.), and sen him to Personnel.
