STATE PEC by hand copies of daily reports of for the week of 5 April. (See
5. Mr. Fforzheimer called Mr. E. L. Bartlett s office (Delegate from
STATS PEC Alaska) and informed them that, as requested, they would. receive 0 daily reports
in due course, also wrote letter to that effect.
6. The Director informed me that at lunch on 11 April with Sen. Taft,
he had explained the inadvisability of pursuing the investigation as it would back-
fire both on Mr, Brown, and the Republican Party generally. The Director informed
Mr. Taft that we had informed the State Department of possible unrest in Bogota and
that it had been impossible of course to predict that sorr~one was going to shoot
Gaitan at the particular moment when it was done..

?_. Mr. #'eeney, of Cong. R~cCormack's office, stated that the Congress-
man had talked to Chairman Hoffman regarding the Brawn resolution and that Chairman
Hoffman had been extremely irked by the fact -that Brawn had released all this informa-
tion to the Press prior. to its receipt by Hoffman.. It seemed doubtful whether the
resolution would be very quickly pressed.
