1. In response to his call, I have informed Mr. Larkin, General Counsel
of the Department of Defense that Gen. Mudge has indicated that in Mr. Larkin's reply
to Sen. Russell regarding outstanding requests for information for the Senate Armed
Services Committee in connection with the MacArthur hearings, that the request to
CIA has been withdrawn.
2. Gen. Mudge, of the staff of the Senate Armed Services Committee,
has returned the copy of the DCI's letter of 21 May, addressed to the Deputy Secretary
of Defense, which was handed Gen. Mudge for Chairman Russell's information. It is
noted that the letter was shown to Senatorg Russell and Saltonstall on 23 May and
that CIA is authorized to inform Mr. Larkin, General Counsel of the Department of
Defense that in his reply concerning the status of information being requested by the
Committee Senator Saltonstall's request for CIA reports has been withdrawn. Mr.
Larkin has been so informed.
