3. Mr. Walter Adams of the office of Senator Moody called
to state that the Senator had received copy of the letter.,
dated 18 Julys written to the DCI by re-
25X1A garding the u case. I read Adams eply of
23 July, and he requested whether it wo be possible for us to
write a further letter stating that the program had been can-
celled for other than security reasons and that no adverse in-
ference against any individual connected with the program could
be drawn from its cancellation. I stated that such a letter
could serve as an endorsement of the security of those and that
CIA was barred by statute from making any such statement. I
stated that I would check the matter further but that we had
never released such a letter since the organization was estab-
lished. Mr. Adams assured me that if such a letter were forth-
coming., the Senator would take all steps to quiet any fuss that
bight make., particularly at the forthcoming con
