1. In the course of his luncheon on 18 January, Senator
Saltonstall mentioned that he and Senators Bridges and Russell had
recently received the special oral report prepared for them by Mr
Robert Sprague on continental defense.

2. Mr. Rhodes, of the staff of the Senate Armed Services Com-
mittee, assigned to assisting Mr. Sprague, informed me that Mr. Sprague
desires two additional figures arising out of his briefing at CIA. In
connection with our figures on scientific people at work in the USSR,
he desires to know whether the figures furnished were for physical
scientists only or included engineers. If the latter, he desires a break-
down. In addition, Mr. Sprague desires the figures on Russian casual-
ties in World War II broken down into killed and wounded. Neither

figures coming up in the course of the discussions, but we will attempt
to run them down. When these two sets of figures are received, I will
send them to Mr. Sprague through 25X1A
