1. Mr. Daniel G. Buckley, Assistant Counsel of the McCarthy
Investigating Committee, called me at home last night to ask whether I
had any objections to their turning over for the public record is .the
McCarthy/Army hearings my letter of 11 May 1953 to David Schine. I
pointed out that the letter was classified Confidential, and that therefore
I would not authorize its release for the Committee record. Shs)I:tly
'thereafter, Mr. Buckley called me back and asked if I would have any
objection to their showing the letter to the members of the Committee for
their information only. I stated that I would have no objections to their
showing the letter to the members of the Committee, provided they called
attention to paragraph 2 of the letter as to the reasons for its classification.
