July 11, 1948 Senator 'Jilliem Langer (R., N.D.), Chairman, Post Office and Civil Service Committee, today in announcing the preliminary results of a questionnaire distributed recently to Federal Government employees, said, "The survey thus far provides some interesting facts. For example, we learn that 75 per cent of the persons employed by the Government are males; that 68 per cent of the total personnel are married and that the average age of those canvassed is !2. "Twenty-eight percent of.the married persons have husbands or wives who also are employees. Of those who have children, 26 per cent of the children are minors, under age 18. "The profile of Government employment continued to reveal many other vital statistics Thirty-six per cent -of those who have answered the ouestionnaire are veterans This is somewhat below the service-wide figure of 42 per cent recently reported by the Executive Branch, though it may well be that our Committee returns my increase this percentage as further replies are received. "Here are some other features of the survey: Those who completed high school . . . . . . . . 78 per cent Those who.possess Civil Service status. . . . . . 75 per cent Those who ha.ve'no minor children dependents . . . 66 per cent Average age when full-time employment was begun . 20 years Average slumber of years in Government service . . 15 years 'Average number of, years in private employment . . 8 years Most recent efficiency rating: Excellent . . . . . . . . . 36 per cent Very Good . . . . . . . . 51 per cent Good....... . . . . . . . . 9 per cent Fair or no reply. . . . . . '4 per cent "Fifty-six per cent said efficiency ratings help them do a better job, while 42 per cent said they do not. The remaining 2 per cent failed'to reply. And, while 10 per cent said "No" to the nuestion "Is your last ef- ficiency rating reasonably correct?", only 2 per cent elected to appeal their ratings. "We will issue further installments on these questionnaire returns soon, Therc remain many other interesting 'phases of the survey to be discussed."
