Vice Admiral Daniel J. Murphy, USN, has been appointed to
the post of Deputy to the Director of Central Intelligence for
the Intelligence Community. The appointment represents an
important step in advancing the President's program for re-
organization of the Intelligence Community.
As my deputy, Admiral Murphy will direct the day-to-day
business of the Community Staff and have particular responsi-
bility for the management of resources devoted to U.S. intel-
ligence activities.
Admiral Murphy, aged 54, brings to his assignment the
experience of a distinguished 33-year career in the U.S. Navy.
His most recent posts were military assistant to the Secretary
of Defense, Commander of the Sixth Fleet, and director of
antisubmarine warfare and ocean surveillance programs in the
Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.
He is holder of the Secretary of Defense Distinguished
Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with Gold Star, and many
other decorations.
Admiral Murphy assumes his new duties today, 29 March 1976.
