CARLUCCI Deputy Director of Central Intelligence Thursday, Los Angeles Hilton November 16, 1978 $5.00 per person 5:30-7:00 p.m. The Central Intelligence Agency has changed since the Cold War days when it was directed by Allen Dulles - when its activities were unquestioned and it was virtually shrouded in mystery. Illumined by the harsh light of public scrutiny and plagued by controversy over past Agency abuses of power, the CIA has been seeking both new guidelines for its functions and a new public image. We are privileged to welcome Mr. Carlucci to our podium for a discussion of what issues the CIA must concern itself with now. Mr. Carlucci was sworn in as Deputy Director of Central Intelligence on February 10, 1978. He is a Career Minister in the Foreign Service and has served in high level positions in many parts of the world, including South Africa, Congo, Zanzibar and Brazil. He served as United States Ambassador to Portugal for three years prior to his appointment as Deputy Director. Please join us for this wine-and -cheese reception and meeting. If you wish to attend, please respond to the Council office either by mail or phone: 900 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 230, L.A. 90017, (213) 628-2333. Enclosed is my check for $ for tickets to the IF meeting with Mr. Frank Carlucci on Thursday, November 16, 1978, 5:30 p.m., at the Los Angeles Hilton Hotel. PETE WILSON In 1946 Louis Lancaster called together ten men in different vocations to form the Channel City Club. The sole purpose would be to invite outstanding people to Santa Barbara to address the Club at luncheon meetings. These ten men were: Frederick Crockett, rancher; Joseph Ewing, minister; Roy Gammill, merchant; Yale Griffith, attorney; Paul Jones, Santa Barbara College; H.O. Koefod, physician; Rudolph Lindquist, Superintendent of City Approved gand, hotel man; Edwin C. Welch, Community Chest President. The Club was unusually successful from the start. Today there are about 1800 members including a large number from Ventura and Ojai. They have been privileged to hear leading men in various fields -Presidents and Vice Presidents of the United States, Secretaries of State and other Cabinet Members, U.S. Senators, Governors, University Presidents, Astronauts, Scientific and Medical men and business leaders, as this partial list of speakers shows. Meetings were to be held at luncheons, afternoon teas or morning coffees. They would start and stop promptly. No other business would be transacted so that full time could be devoted to hearing and questioning the speakers. Bylaws were adopted, a name was chosen, and twenty-four officers and directors were elected. (These have since increased to thirty-six). From the start the Forum proved unusually success- ful. Within a month 500 members had subscribed, and within a year membership had passed the 1,000 mark. Currently membership approximates 1,300. This has been accomplished without any solicitation beyond the first letter of invitation. Such success undoubtedly is due to the high caliber of speakers who have been presented, as partially listed in this brochure. SPEAKERS 1977 HOBSON ADCOCK V.P., Corp. Affairs, PepsiCo. Inc. MRS.
