STA RADIO -T' V REPORTS. INC. I;T l A Approved For Release 2905/~c~strCtl W 453 DATE PUBLIC AFFAIRS STAFF CBS Evening News March 21, 1973 7:00 P.M. W T O P TV CBS Network Washington, D.C. McCONE' S TESTIMONY ON PLAN TO THWART ALLENDE ROGER MUDD: John McCone, a director of ITT and former head of the CIA, told a Senate hearing today of ITT's efforts to save its Chilean property from takeover by (Marxist president Allende. McCone said that after the '70 election when it became apparent Allende would emerge as the winner, ITT went into action. George Herman reports. GEORGE HERMAN: McCone testified that ITT president Harold Geneen offered a million dollars to any U.S. government agency with a plan to have Chile's parliament decide the election in favor of conservative candidate Alessandri [?], thus ending. Allende's threat to expropriate ITT property. McCone says he conveyed that offer to the CIA and Dr. Henry Kissinger. JOHN McCONE: I also met with Mr. Kissinger, and I told him if he had a plan. Now, Mr. Kissinger thanked me very much and said that I would hear from him I didn't hear from him again. And therefore I assumed that no such plan was -- was adopted as a matter of national policy, and that was the end of it as far as I was concerned. SENATOR: When Mr. Geneen told you that he was prepared to offer up to a million dollars of company funds to support a government plan the purpose of which would be to assist-or promote a coalition against Allende, the coalition you refer to would have been a coalition of parties or of votes in the Chilean congress that had to pass upon whether or not Allende would be installed as president. Isn't that correct? McCONE : Yees . I t r,woul d be a coalition of -- of the senators or the parliamentarians representing the Christian Democratic Party and the party of Alessandri. SENATOR: Yes .
