Two stage magnesium sulphite cooking with an alkaline
first stage and an acid second stage gave higher yields
than a one stage conventional acid sulphite cooks. With
saturated solutions in the first stage, highest yield in-
crease was obtained at pH 9. and was found in this in-
vestigation to be 3.6%. By adding sulphite spent liquor
a saturated solution containing 2 to 3 times as much
magnesium sulphite to obtained and probably a higher
