SUBJE Acquisition of Surplus Equipment for Community Project
1. The Information Handling Committee is continuing to coordinate and
support the implementation of an information system in support of the Joint
Maritime Information Element (JMIE), a consortium of Intelligence Community
and law enforcement agencies providing maritime intelligence support, inter
alia, to the narcotics interdiction effort.
2. In the past, you and your office were extremely helpful in providing
this project with surplus disc drives which have been used in a prototype
system. We are now looking to acquire additional equipment needed for an
operational system. Because of budget constraints, it is highly desirable
that we use surplus equipment if at all possible. In order to be of
assistance in this phase of the project, we need to identify and take delivery
of any equipment which might become available within the next nine months.
3. I am attaching hereto a list of thP tvnes of pnuinmpnt which are

of your staff, and they indicated that some items ot equipment which Could be
used for this purpose may become available in the near future. In particular
it was reported that two Comtens and a number of IBM 3277 terminals are now or
will soon be available. We have asked that these items be temporarily held
pending determination as to whether or not they can be used by the project.
We will inform your staff as soon as possible of our finding.
4. I would appreciate your continued cooperation in making any such _
surplus equipment available to this important Community project. We will, of

The IHC is attempting to locate any surplus items of IBM or IBM compatible
equipment which could be reutilized as part of an IBM 43XX system being
installed in support of an Intelligence Community sponsored information
system. We will appreciate notification of the availability within the next
nine months of any of the equipment listed below or of any similar items of
equipment which might be utilized in lieu thereof as follows:
