Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2013/07/31: CIA-RDP91B00060R000100150002-7 rb.14-1 ADMINISTRATI - INTERNAL USE ONLY OIT #1191-88 16 NOV 1988 MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, Cartography, Design and Publishing Group, CPAS/DI SI-AT FROM: SUBJECT: REFERENCE: Deputy Director of Information Technology, DA Intergraph Corporation and IBM Connectivity Your Memo, dtd 30 Mar 88, Same Subject 1. In OIT's interim response (OIT-0699-88) to your request, we suggested that you configure your workstations as SNA 3270 terminals connected through the PBX for access to VM., The alternative option was to use an SNA gateway connection to VM. 2. Our Engineering Services Group has discussed this matter with Intergraph and determined that their workstations cannot be configured as a 3270 terminal. Intergraph does, however, have a capability to attach -to VM via an SNA gateway, which can be either the VAX with an appropriate communications board or an Intergraph Clipper with its communications board and software. 3. This capability is new and has never been tested within the Agency, but Intergraph is confident that it will work. Unfortunately, Intergraph does not support host interactive graphics through this SNA connection and they have no immediate plans to do so. Thus, Intergraph workstations connected via a VAX or Intergraph SNA gateway would not be able to get interactive graphics from Telagraf, TACK, or similar host-based products in the way your present Tektronics-type connections offer today. 4. Since you have verified that the Intergraph 220 can function as a Tektronics replacement, another alternative not discussed in our interim response is to connect the Intergraph 220 to VM using your existing ten Tektronics connections (which are made via direct TTY-type wiring, not through the PBX). You should be aware that the long term viability of terminals connected to VM via TTY-type connections is not guaranteed by OIT because IBM intends to migrate to VM/XA which will not support TTY terminals. Further, TTY connections are contrary to OIT Standards for terminal connectivity and would require a short-term waiver. ADMINISTRATIV NTERNAL USE ONLY ? I recommend that you minimize the TTY-type connections to the ten you already have and start work on installing and using the SNA Gateway approach. Intergraph seems to be interested in providing graphics functionality through their Gateway (though not through the VAX), and I consider this a better STAT long-term approach. of OIT/ESG is available STAT discuss the technical tradeoffs, and of OIT/ESG secure) can assist in cost determinations. Action Requested. That your office analyze the feasibility of connecting our aew Intergraph workstations to VA. - 2. Background. The new Intergraph workstations emulate a Tektronix 4107 and an IBYVPC. An Intergraph/IBM connection to VM would help to eliminate our current redundancy of workstations and significantly -- ? enhance the productivity of our cartographers and designers by having a tingle production workstation. .15.. Our Systems Center has had preliminary meetings with Chief, Network Services Branch/OIT, to ensure our goals are consistent with those of your office and the Agency. The attachment includes information on the Intergraph/IBM connectivity options. Please contact for additional information. Attachments: A.
