Maloney Director of Information Technology Request for Communications Support for Field Systems Group at South Building Your Memo, dtd 6 June 1988, Same Subject 1. Office of Information Technology (OIT) agrees that a narrative traffic capability is necessary to enable the Field System Group/IMS (FSG) to communi- cate daily on a worldwide basis regarding the CRAFT program. Also, that FSG use of the T/WI testbed at South Building would provide valuable hands-on 2. Accordingly, OIT plans to establish a narrative traffic capability at South Building using Electronic Dissemination Circuitry (EDC) - an extension f h experience and enhance further development of the T/WI software program. o t e Headquarters Cable Dissemination System (CDS). This circuitry is the same as that r~~rrpntly supporting FSG's narrative traffic at 3. The TERP IIA presently installed in the South Building CER will remain at that facility in an off-line configuration for FSG's use in development of T ~ T.TT - 4. Unfortunately, OIT has neither-the personnel nor positions to provide professional communications staffing. However, the operational simplicity of EDC circuitry is such that it can be operated by non- rofessional communica- tions personnel, and OIT will pursue this approach. 5. The Field S stems Group/IMS (FSG) will be relocating from to the South Building between October, , an February, 1989.- As the program office for CRAFT, communications support is a necessity as-FSG communicates worldwide through staff channels on a daily basis. At the very least, communicatio with the support provided to FSG at is required. However, we are requesting full communications support,-including two communicators and a TERP so that we may use the Terminal Wang Interface (T/WI) software program to interface the office systems electronically with the TERP. 2. FSG will deploy the T/WI program on a world-wide basis in the near future; this summer, the program will 6e imolPmPni-ad progress of T/WI development. Further, very few officers in FSG have had the opportunity to work with T/WI, as the number of officers that are allowed to TDY to a site at one time is limited. As a result, because of lack of experience and exposure to T/WI, few offi.cers:.in.FSG are qualified to support the program in the field. At the present time, FSG does not have the capability to test T/WI in-house. Rather, the product has to be deployed before software problems can be detected; this leads to lack of confidence on part of the test sites, and has slowed down the in several domestic sites C O N F I D E N T I A L Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2013/04/24 :CIA-RDP91 B00060R000100160024-2 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2013/04/24 :CIA-RDP91 B00060R000100160024-2 25X1 25X1 3. To address these shortcomings, FSG needs the ability to use T/WI on an operational basis. Not only would officers gain experience with a program they must support world-wide, but deployment and program development-would occur at a faster rate because of the increased support and ability to detect software problems prior to deployment. The present occupant of South Building, the Office of Technical Services, is using T/WI to interface their office system with the TERP, therefore, all communications hardware is in place to support the effort. We request that the same support currently enjoyed by OTS be provided to FSG after its move to South Building. If this support can be provided, FSG will need to initiate steps to acquire a cable address designator. 4. Any questions or corres ondence concerning this request should be directed to C/IMS/FSG, secure ~ Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2013/04/24 :CIA-RDP91 B00060R000100160024-2
