All are both current and long-term problems for which CIA requirements exceed or are significantly different from normal commercial requirements. 1. Research on virus detection and elimination. This problem is only going to get worse, both on PCs and eventually on mainframes (as PC programs are shared via mainframe minidisks). We have the same basic problem as everyone else, but we may have a different issue with regard to both who is targetting us, and consequences of a successful "infection" in the Agency. 2. We need R&D on improved methods for automated data base conversions. In brief discussions with ORD earlier this year I got a sense that what we want is feasible, but will need high level visibility to get something started. I realize that we have selected a case-by- case approach for the near term, but this problem will not be going away, and a long-range, strategic, program in this area would be useful. The program should have a sequence of successively more competent tools for automatic translations of both data bases and applications, as its deliverables, focussing on GIMS and RAMIS to begin. 3. We need help on improved methods for imagery transmission, storage and display on Agency standard systems (networks, mainframes, workstations). The volume of imagery for which analysts will be clamoring over the next five years and beyond exceeds our capacity to deliver. It should be a relatively straightforward technical R&D project to get us some help over the next three years in this area.
