I. Warning - There were no warning items at this time in the East Asia area; the possibility of a change in government in Thailand was discussed. II. Regional Developments A. State gave an interim report on the Nakasone visit, which was still underway. Most indicators were positive. Significance for Collection and Analysis -- assessments were provided to policymakers in a timely and useful manner before the Nakasone visit. B. CIA described the relatively low level of VN military activity in the Thai-Kampuchean border during this dry season. (In only one of the four years since PAVN forces have been in the area has a high level of activity -- "an offensive" taken place.) C. NSA described the recent meeting with DCI of S/NIO, DIO, INR DAS and DDI and DDO reps on intelligence activities this year. NI0/EA described the preparations in support of Secretary Shultz's trip to Asia; particular Community papers were noted. III. Plans for Interagency Work - Work underway was reviewed. Participants were asked to solicit additional possibilities from their Agencies. IV. Regional Policy Issues -- Secretary Shultz's visit remains the principal item.
