Dear Carl:
I write to convey to you the sense of sadness and loss
that we in the Intelligence Community share with you and those
under your command. The tragedy aboard the IOWA touches us all.
I recall having dinner aboard the IOWA at the time of the
celebration of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. I was
given a tour of the same gun turret and met many of the seamen
who were assigned to duty there. Our hearts go out to the
families of those lost in line of duty. But if my conver-
sations with the men then on duty are any indication, they were
doing what they wanted to do, were proud of what they were
doing, and believed that their mission was important for us
all. Indeed it was.
