Heinz, USAF Director, Intelligence Community Staff Headquarters Building Washington, DC 20505 Dear General Heinz: June 27, 1989 As you know, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is one of the two national laboratories charged with the responsibility for design and test of our nation's nuclear weapon capability. In addition we have also developed advanced capabilities in the nonnuclear area. Some examples are the Induction Linac Free Electron Laser, the Inertial Confinement Fusion Program, Brilliant Pebbles, and the Special Isotope Separation Program, to name just a few. In addition to these technology programs, we also have a dedicated group of scientists who follow intelligence information on the Soviet Union and other countries. These analysts work with all member organizations of the U.S. Intelligence Community and produce finished intelligence which is strongly rooted in our understanding of comparable technologies at LLNL. I would very much appreciate the opportunity to host a visit to LLNL by you and any members of your staff that you may deem appropriate. I believe this could be a valuable two-way exchange of information. We could show you firsthand some of our current technology programs, and we would look forward to hearing of ways that the Laboratory could be of further assistance in the intelligence arena. If this visit would be of interest to you, please have your staff contact Robert Andrews, at (415) 422-5006, to arrange the details. Bob is the Program Leader for our Special Projects Program, the intelligence support organization at LLNL. Thanks in advance for your consideration of this invitation. Best regards, ohn H.
