1. SIGNIFICANCE: A SHIPMENT OF MEDIUM TANKS AND FIELD ARTILLERY
THIS ARMS DELIVERY REPRESENTS ONE OF THE LARGEST EVER
OBSERVED TO CUBA FROM THE SOVIET UNION. (SWN)
2. REMARKS: FOUR MEDIUM TANKS AND AT LEAST 112 FIELD ARTILLERY
PIECES (31 FIELD GUNS/HOWITZERS AND EIGHTY-ONE 85/100MM FIELD
GUNS) HAVE BEEN OFFLOADED FROM A SOVIET LENINSKIY
KOMSOMOL-CLASS MERSHIP. THE MERSHIP HAS ARRIVED
AND IS STILL AT THE MOLE. EIGHT TANK TRANSPORTERS
(SIX WITH PRIME MOVERS) ARE NEARBY FOR MOVEMENT OF THE TANKS.
TWO LARGE TENTS, FOR HOUSING SECURITY PERSONNEL DURING THE
TRANSSHIPMENT ACTIVITY, ARE ON THE NEARBY QUAY. (SWN)
