MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director (Intelligence)
General
Peiping press, commenting on incident of 9 February in
which USN bomber was hit over Sungmen Peninsula, reiterated
warning that US must be responsible for consequences arising
from "provocations." Chinese Communist MIG's have been
reported patrolling over the mainland coast opposite the
Tachens. However, the evacuation has remained unchallenged
by nearby Communist forces through the fifth day of the
operation.
The evacuation of Nationalist guerrillas and civilians
from Yushan and Pishan was completed on 9 February under the
naval and air cover of the Seventh Fleet.
Matsus
Negative.
Quemoy
Communist fishing boats approached Tatan Island on 8
February, the second such reconnaissance in ten days. The
Communists apparently are testing guerrilla defenses on
lightly-held Tatan, three miles southwest of Little Quemoy.
